Located just west of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the Dqae Qare San Reserve is owned by the San (Bushmen) Tribe and is there to preserve the unique San culture and lifestyle. The goals of this endeavor include providing employment opportunities for the San, monitoring wildlife on the reserve, and further developing the reserve for conservation and sustainable conservation tourism. This project combines meaningful conservation work with travels through Botswana.
It is an exciting time to get involved! Our efforts are in their infancy, so our first step will be to establish a base camp for future research/conservation efforts. During the first year, we will be conducting a baseline wildlife census to know what animals call Dqae home. Other efforts include the monitoring border fence activity, mapping the reserve, setting camera traps, conducting first-hand waterhole counts, building infrastructure, and tracking animals.
During our time at the reserve you will have amply opportunities to interact and work with the local bushman tribe, the San. Recreational activities include stargazing, sitting around the campfire learning traditional San dances, tracking animals with a skilled bushman, and learning some of their amazing bush skills. Walking safaris, driving safaris and perfect sunsets are standard.
